There are so many times the Bible tells us to stand apart from the world. We, as Christians, are the light and salt of the Earth. We do not conform to the ways of the world, and we stand out from others by our thoughts and actions. It’s easy to grasp this concept of standing out, but it’s not always easy remembering to put it into action in our daily lives.
So, I’ve put together a list of qualities that make daughters of Christ different from girls of the world.
Before we get to the list though, it’s important to keep our focus. Do we try to be different because we want others to like us? Not really. Is it so we can be popular? No. Is it to draw attention to ourselves and makes ourselves look good? Definitely not. The only reason we should want to act different from the world is because we are different. The world does not want Jesus, the world does not care about Him or what He’s done for us.But we, as followers of Christ, do want Him. We do care about Him and what He’s done for us. This fact should cause us to act differently from the world. Following God’s commandments naturally makes us stand out.
Matthew 5:16 says:
“In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good works and praise your Father in heaven.”
If we live in a way that brings glory to Him, we can show others His love. That’s our motivation- to show others God’s love and to bring glory to Him.
So, here’s the list of differences between a girl of the world and a daughter of Christ:
A girl of the world worries about looking better than those around her.
A daughter of Christ makes others feel loved and appreciated. (Ephesians 4:29)
A girl of the world cares more about her own happiness than anyone else’s.
A daughter of Christ shows respect to everyone and puts them above herself. (Romans 12:3)
A girl of the world has trouble encouraging others and building them up.
A daughter of Christ always expresses her generous or encouraging thoughts. (Proverbs 16:24)
A girl of the world doesn’t concern herself with other people’s problems.
A daughter of Christ listens to others’ heartaches. (Romans 12:15b, Proverbs 31:20)
A girl of the world loves to gossip and hear herself talk.
A daughter of Christ speaks from her heart and only to add value to others. (Proverbs 31:26)
A girl of the world complains when someone asks her to do more than what is required.
A daughter of Christ does more than what is asked of her, and does it happily. (Matthew 5: 41-42)
A girl of the world cannot keep her promises and talks behind her friends’ backs.
A daughter of Christ acts honestly and consistently with everyone. (Romans 12:18)
A girl of the world gossips about her friends.
A daughter of Christ never engages in speaking negatively about another person. (1 Thessalonians 5:11, Proverbs 20:19)
A girl of the world has confidence in herself and her abilities and shows it.
A daughter of Christ has confidence in God and shows it. (Hebrews 4:16, Proverbs 28:1b)
A girl of the world loves to start drama and arguments.
A daughter of Christ seeks peace with everyone. (Psalm 34:14, Matthew 5:9)
A girl of the world judges others before she gets to know them.
A daughter of Christ assumes the best in everybody. (James 4:12, Matthew 7:5)
A girl of the world is ashamed to talk about Jesus.
A daughter of Christ never shies away from an opportunity to spread her faith. (Mark 16:15-16)
I don’t know about y’all reading this, but typing this list makes me feel really convicted. I feel like a lot of the time, my actions don’t bring honor to God, and that is a problem I’m very willing to work on. However, while I feel convicted, I’m also encouraged because I know that with God’s love in me, I am capable of living faithfully and standing out from those around me. Standing out is not to draw attention to ourselves, it’s to point others to God. I pray that God will work on my heart and give me the strength to live as a daughter of Christ and to point others to Him by my actions.
