Come, Thou Fount of every blessing,
Tune my heart to sing Thy grace
Our hearts need perpetual tuning. We sometimes get out of tune. We easily allow other things come in and take up spaces in our heart where they don’t belong. Our hearts and minds get a little off. If one key of a piano is off, the music is ruined. We cannot live in harmony with each other and with God’s word if our heart is out of tune.
Let Thy goodness, like a fetter,
Bind my wandering heart to Thee.
Prone to wander, Lord, I feel it,
Prone to leave the God I love;
Here’s my heart, O take and seal it,
Seal it for Thy courts above.
I am so prone to wander. I am prone to forget the God I love and chase after things that are harmful to me. Living in a world that constantly bombards us with things that appeal to our natural side, it’s so easy to get distracted and roam away from our purpose. Our heart chases after worldly pleasures and forgets about God. Our minds get distracted with money or popularity or success, and when those things become our focus, we begin to stray from the purpose that God has created us for. We have to continually pray for our hearts to be bound to Christ. We cannot become the women of God that we are meant to be when our hearts are focused on the world, not on God.
The world is full of chaos. We get distracted. We get out of tune. We long for fulfillment and we go searching for it in places we shouldn’t be looking and in places we’ll never find it. We long for the empty space in our heart to be filled, and we chase after the world’s chaos instead of God’s secure love. We stop praising God and start praising people and material things. If our heart is in the wrong place, there’s no way we can be a light for God or live in His will. If we begin to worry about our image and our success, we begin to struggle with following God’s commandments- like helping those less fortunate or spreading the love of God.
Relationships, school, work, and social events all take up space in our mind. They all come with their own distractions and stress. There’s worry in every aspect of our lives. But when our heart is in tune with God, the stress becomes much easier to handle. This makes it even more important to give God the first priority in our life. When He is given attention first, everything else falls into harmony.
There’s so many glittering things that the world offers us.
But just because it glitters doesn’t mean it’s valuable.
God’s love is valuable.
God’s love is our sole motivation to keep living every day. We owe him our complete and devout attention every moment of every day. Our primary focus needs to be honoring and praising God, not chasing after trivial worldly desires.
Therefore, with minds that are alert and fully sober, set your hope on the grace to be brought to you when Jesus Christ is revealed at his coming. As obedient children, do not conform to the evil desires you had when you lived in ignorance. But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; for it is written: “Be holy, because I am holy.”
1 Peter 1:13-16
Our goal should be to become like Christ; to live like He lived, to love like He loved, to be holy like He is holy. To do that, we can’t be constantly distracted, we can’t let our heart wander away from Him. I need my mind to be bound to Christ and I need my heart tuned to praise Him with every breath I have. I pray that God holds tight to my heart. I pray that I am given strength to stay focused on Him instead of getting distracted by the world.
